Ecuadorian president ousted

Gutierrez has now sought asylum in Brazil

The president of Ecuador, Lucio Gutierrez, was ousted by Congress on Wednesday, after a week of violent protests. He has now sought asylum in Brazil.

Gutierrez escaped from the presidential palace by helicopter, after congressmen voted to overthrow him for "abandoning his post". Two people are reported dead after clashes between protesters.

Opposition candidates have accused Gutierrez' of acting like a dictator, after he filled the Supreme Court with his political allies last December.

Gutierrez is the third president to be forced out of office in Peru in eight years. He came to power in 2002, after serving a brief term in jail for leading a coup against former president Jamil Mahuad.
