Cocoa producers threaten to go on strike. Cocoa producer unions have threatened to go on a general strike against the low cocoa prices. If the government fails to increase cocoa prices for farmers, the unions have threatened to resort to blockage of the countryÕs ports and stop the movement of cocoa supplies. Unions have set the deadline for Oct 18 for launch their agitation unless the farm price for cocoa is set at CFAF 500 per kg. Syprocafcaoci union, Vice-President Koffi Kanga said 12 farmers' unions and most of the growersÕ co-operatives have voiced their support for the strike. Meanwhile, exporters said the threatened strike is likely to disrupt cocoa supplies. However exporters and traders expect the strike to be for a short duration. After weeks of agitation, the cocoa prices were recently set at CFAF 390 (USD 0.74) per kg. The unions have rejected this offer. Ivory Coast produces around 40% of the world's cocoa output.
