Islamic derivatives boom raises hopes — and fears

Bankers are predicting a breakthrough year in 2012 for Shariah compliant hedging and structured investment solutions, with demand increasing to record levels and a deepening of the suite of available products.

The recent trend has opened up for some participants the prospect of strengthening short term liquidity and market standardisation. For others, however, it raises concerns about the increasing complexity of the industry and the likelihood of disputes over the influx of technologies associated with conventional market speculation.
