RMB Roundup – February 6

In this week’s roundup of offshore renminbi news, Hong Kong RMB deposits reached Rmb860.5bn by the end of December and Australia’s Westpac was granted a derivatives licence in China.

• Renminbi deposits in Hong Kong rose by 4% to Rmb860.5bn ($142bn) in December, while the total remittance of renminbi for cross-border trade settlement amounted to Rmb469.6bn, a little up from Rmb439.4bn in November, according to statistics published on January 30 by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.

• Westpac Institutional Bank has been granted a general derivatives licence by the China Banking Regulatory Commission, making it the third bank in China to be awarded such a licence under the new regulatory framework introduced in January 2011. With the new licence, Westpac’s Shanghai and Beijing branches will be able to launch new derivatives business, which will focus initially on G7 interest rate derivatives.
