Early start is better for Asia Basel III before European rush

Basel III bond supply from European banks is likely to pick up in the second half of the year increasing competition for their Asian counterparts. However, the fact that banks in Asia are well capitalised combined with good local liquidity may alleviate competition for US dollar funding, writes Clare Hammond.

Many countries in Asia implemented Basel III regulations earlier this year, although to date there has been little bond supply from Asian lenders. However, bankers believe this is likely to change once the market returns from its August break.
