SURE ready to roll, but Hungary held up

The European Union has passed the penultimate hurdle delaying its €100bn Support to mitigate Unemployment Risk in an Emergency (SURE) programme, all but clearing the way for issuance to begin. But one country’s request for funds has not yet been granted.

The SURE programme loans benefit from guarantees approved individually by each member state. Bulgaria provided the final guarantee this week, meaning that the 16 proposals approved by the European Commission can now be approved by the council.
