Frequently mistaken identities

“What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” wrote William Shakespeare.

“Not if you called ‘em stench-blossoms,” argued the equally profound Bart Simpson, a few centuries later. “Or crapweeds or scumdrops,” added his father Homer.

Indeed, it seems that one of the biggest borrowers in the market has been suffering from the problems that can be wrought of name-confusion.

While checking the UK Debt Management Office’s website we found that the top answer in its FAQ section — explained that the DMO, in fact, was not a service to help people with queries about managing their household debt. It then, helpfully, pointed them in the right direction via a series of links.

But it did get us thinking — it’s an easy mistake for people to make, given the name Debt Management Office. We’re pretty sure the UK DMO website will be near the top for anyone Googling “debt management” from the UK.

Rumour has it that the question shot to the top of the FAQ two or three days before UK chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne gave his autumn statement. 

Could it be that the man who promised to deliver a £29bn budget surplus in five to six years had procrastinated and was desperate for some last minute help?

Surely he knows better.
