‘Get on your knees or pay the fees’

Bankers are feeling the squeeze these days. So when it comes to the issue of school fees, creative thinking may be required, especially in London where competition for the best schools is keen and fees are even keener.

One covered bond banker who only recently had a baby has been thinking ahead for the day when his little girl will be ready for high school.  Anxious to ensure she got the very best London’s educational establishments could offer, he tried the private route. Aghast at the sky high fees, he hunted around to see what state sponsored alternative establishments could offer.

In his particular borough it turns out that the local faith school was the place to be. The only trouble was that they would need proof that his faith was in something much higher than just covered bonds. Much as he eulogised covered bonds — and he eulogised much — that wasn’t the kind of faith the school was looking for.

What they wanted was something more along the lines of what might be termed OC – or ‘Ostensible Catholicism’.

“Get on your knees or pay the fees,” they said, or something to that effect.

So he joined the congregation, and is now a regular among those hoping to secure salvation…or at least some savings.
