Nomura Raids Merrill’s London Equity Operation

Nomura International has lured 13 equity derivatives professionals from Merrill Lynch in London as part of its efforts to build a presence in the City under Joachim Willnow, managing director who himself recently joined from Merrill. Cameron Walker, spokesman for Nomura, noted the hires were made individually rather than as a team. Walker added that Nomura may look to make further hires. In addition to the 13 professionals from Merrill, Nomura has also recruited an equity professional from BNP Paribas and one from Jardine Lloyd Thompson. Nomura’s equity derivatives group will report to Zenji Nakamura, head of global markets in Europe. “This is a big hit for Merrill right now,” said an official at a rival firm. “I think [Merrill] should be able to hire the people they’re looking for, but it could be a struggle,” he added. Patrick Meyer, spokesman for Merrill in London, said, “A large number of these positions have already been filled with internal and external hires.”

The new hires are: Mike Fullalove, who joins as managing director from Merrill, along with Marc Baylis, Fred Clatworthy, Ignacio Lanza-Sanchez and Eva Weiss as directors. Matthew Peakman, Ingo Heinen, Gregg Spivey, Daniel Dolan, Dominik von Eynern and Paul Goetz join as v.p.s, with Rebecca Bernstone and Niels Verbeek as assistant v.p.s, all also from Merrill. Enrique Hernandez-Amores joins the team from BNP Paribas as a director, and Amit Trivedi joins from Jardine Lloyd Thompson as an assistant v.p., according to Walker.
