Global sukuk looks for strong start after hitting $144bn record in 2012
Global sukuk issuance in 2012 exceeded $144bn, according to the IFIS Sukuk Database, with some $7.5bn of deals in December adding to the year’s record volume. The final total was nearly 55% up on the $93bn issued in 2011, which was also the industry’s previous record year.
There was $21.8bn of international sukuk issuance in 2012 double the $10.8bn of deals in 2011.
Decembers total also surpassed the $5.2bn issued in December 2011. Last month's issuance was mainly Malaysian ringgit denominated, although there was a SR1.9bn ($506.7m) seven year sukuk from Banque Saudi Fransi.
