Scope sees low rates as 'seeds of next crisis'

Low interest rates will drive banks up the risk curve in search of higher yields to boost lagging earnings, Scope Ratings has said, though it sees the European banking sector entering 2014 on safer ground.

The ratings agency said that while low rates were helping borrowers make payments on loans and keeping many European economies from deteriorating further, they were suppressing banks’ earnings and would push them into higher risk activities to escape low margins and volumes.
