Playing hooky has its pitfalls

I am a man of simple pleasures these days, happy to sit in my local with a pint of ale watching football — or if I’m catching up with some chums, a glass of whisky.

It’s all very different to my days as a high-flying banker when I was at the beck and call of my boss and clients. Back then, any time off was a rare and precious thing. To judge by a story a friend recently told me, holidays are still highly treasured by the young‘uns.

One of his junior traders had gone to Thailand for a break, but those few days away from his desk, soaking up the sun and the sea gave him a whole new outlook on life, because when the time came to leave, he just couldn’t bring himself to do so.

Desperate to extend his time in paradise, he emailed my mate in Hong Kong claiming that he had caught a serious bug and couldn’t fly for a week or so. Satisfied with this deception, he then headed to a beach-side bar for another pina colada.

But the chap was in for a nasty surprise because it turned out that his boss had been whipped away on a surprise long weekend to Thailand by his wife. As fate would have it, the youngster found himself face-to-face with his boss at the bar.

Luckily for him, my friend is a top bloke and, after a few minutes of putting the fear of god into his underling, he walked off chuckling.

I’m sure the young fellow won’t be asking for holidays any time soon.
